Modern Thinking in Conveyancing 2018 will feature several key industry figures addressing prominent issues in the marketplace, whilst looking at emerging success and innovation currently taking place in the conveyancing world.

George Gretton

George Gretton took the LLB as a second degree, and then served an apprenticeship with an Edinburgh firm. He practised for a short period as an NQ before taking up a lectureship at Edinburgh University in 1981, where he has remained. He became a Professor in 1994. On reaching the age of 65 in 2016 he retired, and became a Professor Emeritus. Between 2006 and 2011 he was on leave of absence from the university while working as a Scottish Law Commissioner. In 2017 was published Nothing so Practical as a Good Theory: Festschrift for George L. Gretton edited by A.J.M. Steven, R. G. Anderson, J.MacLeod.

John has over 30 years’ legal, policy and practical experience, across all aspects of land and property registration in Scotland.

A graduate of Edinburgh University Law school, he has been instrumental in a number of major policy changes throughout the country, from the execution of the Land Registration (Scotland) Act 2012 to the launch of the Development Plan Approval (DPA) service. He led the successful phase 1 delivery of RoS’s digital transformation programme which included both the digital discharge service and ScotLIS.

Since joining M&B he has taken on the role of counsel and strategic guidance across all aspects of the business, including the resolution of complex title issues (including rectification) through to extension of the company’s current core capabilities to support larger scale voluntary registration projects.

Laura Tainsh is the lead Partner in the Environmental & Waste Team at Davidson Chalmers LLP, a full-service commercial law firm based in Edinburgh.

Laura is a Chartered Waste Manager with the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the only solicitor in Scotland to have obtained this accolade. She is also a member of the Scottish Council of CIWM and the Scottish representative of the CIWM Scientific and Technical Committee. In addition, Laura is a Law Society of Scotland Accredited Specialist in Environmental Law and is an active member of Law Society of Scotland Accredited Specialist in Environmental and of the Scottish Committee of the UK Environmental Law Association.

Laura has varied and wide-ranging experience which covers environmental issues, particularly in the waste sector and enjoys being involved in unique transactions which require a bespoke but commercial approach.

On the more academic side of things, Laura is a member of the editing board of the highly regarded Scottish Planning & Environmental Law (SPEL) Journal as well as being a regular contributor to the journal and also to Materials Recycling World Magazine as a columnist. She also regularly presents at and hosts seminars and conference events on all aspects of environmental law but particularly on issues to do with waste management and policy.

Born, raised and educated in Glasgow Donald gained an M.A. and LLB at the University of Glasgow becoming a Partner in Mitchells Roberton in 1978.

He is a specialist in property law dealing mainly in commercial transactions, security work and property related company matters. He lectures widely and frequently to the profession on these topics. He is listed in the Law Society of Scotland’s approved Directory of Expert Witnesses relative to professional negligence claims.

Donald gives evidence in court on instruction of both Pursuers and Defenders. In January 2005 Donald gained accreditation as a qualified mediator. Donald lectured and tutored on the Diploma in Legal Practice for 20 years.

Jennifer is the Chief Executive and Keeper of the Registers of Scotland, which is the non-ministerial government department responsible for compiling and maintaining 19 public registers in Scotland. These relate to land, property, and other legal documents.

Jennifer has been with the UK Civil Service since 1994.  Prior to her current role she was a Deputy Director at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, developing the department’s business plan and previously supporting the initial phase of the Building Safety Programme established in response to the fire at Grenfell Tower.

Prior to that, she was a member of the executive team at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl – an Executive Agency of the UK Ministry of Defence), as Operations Director and then as Transformation Director, ensuring that innovative science and technology contributes to the defence and security of the UK.

Technical Director at WSP with over 20 years’ experience in the management of ground risk liability. Alexander has accountability for providing environmental advice, support and technical guidance across all WSP UK offices.  Alexander has previously been employed by WSP Remediation Ltd, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), GeoDelft and British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL).

He is a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Scientist and European Geologist together with Accredited Risk Assessor. He is elected Chair of The Society of Brownfield Risk Assessors (SoBRA). The latter seeks to promote and share good practice in the delivery and advancement of land qulaity. He represents SoBRA on the UK Land Forum and the National Land Quality Mark (NQMS) steering groups.

He is an author in both domestic and international publications and is a regular presenter and chair at conference.

He has completed projects encompassing problem holder legislative responsibilities, divestiture and audit together with strategy development and resource assessment. He regularly acts as an expert witness in the Scottish Courts.
